How To Deal With Chapped Lips?

Having Dried and Chapped lips? These are definitely trouble all the gorgeous in winter season. It also ruins application of flawless lipsticks and make a very tacky pout.  So what are chapped lips? In simple terms Chapped lips are a result of excessive dryness, usually brought on by a compromised skin barrier. The skin can crack and in severe cases, scab up. Damage to the skin barrier is often caused by changes in air humidity or exposure to irritants. If you want to keep them kissable, give them some protection.

Causes Of Chapped Lips
It can happen because of a number of reasons and a dry cold climate are one of the main causes.

"One reason your lips are so prone to dryness is because they are very thin. They are the thinnest skin on our bodies — they don't have the protective layer that say your back has.” explains Mona Gohara, M.D. and associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University.

Like other parts of the skin, lips don’t contain oil glands. That means they’re more susceptible to drying out and becoming chapped. Lack of moisture can worsen the problem. 

Cracked lips are usually a mild symptom that occurs as a result of environmental factors or conditions such as mild dehydration and the common cold. Cracked lips are rarely a sign of a severe condition.

Certain medications (like vitamin A, retinoids, lithium and chemotherapy drugs) can cause chapped lips.

Another common cause of chapped lips is habitual licking. Saliva from the tongue can strip the lips of moisture, causing more dryness.

People with other skin conditions such as fungal infections, eczema, lichen planus, SLE, sarcoidosis, nutritional deficiencies (Zinc or iron deficiency) and Crohn's disease, can also face the issue.

Prevention of Chapped Lips

Don’t try to peel: Scratching, peeling off flakes of dry skin, and biting chapped lips are all tempting, but equally bad for your mouth as it heals. Picking at chapped lips can irritate them and cause bleeding, which will slow the healing process and may invite an infection. It can also trigger cold sores if you are prone to them

Hydrate: Just like the rest of your body, dry flaky skin can be caused by dehydration, so drink up! If your lips are continually chapped, drink eight 250-mL glasses of water a day-more, if you can. While this won’t prevent dryness, it will keep it from getting worse.

Protect with sun scream: Major changes in weather isn't the only environmental factor that can leave your lips cracked and dry. Excess sun exposure can lead to chapped lips. An easy solution? Protecting your lips with a hydrating balm that also contains SPF. There are plenty of balms and glosses that have SPF in them, which are necessary for days at the beach or on the ski hill to protect your lips from dryness short term, and keep them plump and luscious long term. If your lips are already cracked, wait for them to heal first, as SPF can irritate.

Apply Perfect Lip Balm: Unfortunately, many lip products contain chemicals that actually dry out your lips. When your lips are actively chapped, it’s especially important to read labels carefully and avoid balms, ointments, and other lip products that contain irritants. Fragrance, Menthol, Salicylic acid, Eucalyptus, Alcohol, Dyes, Flavorings, especially cinnamon, mint, and citrus, Camphor, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. When looking for a moisturizing lip balm, look for emollient ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, squalene, and petrolatum, which all help repair the skin barrier.

Cover your lips: Wrap a scarf or hood across your mouth on a windy day. Avoid irritating it as it heals.

Exploitation: Exfoliating your lips is important before you apply a matte lipstick, but most importantly, to get rid of dry flaky skin on the lips. Actually, exfoliation of lips should be a part of your regular beauty regimen since this practice makes lips smooth and soft. When lips are exfoliated properly, all the unwanted dead cells are removed effectively and this in turn, helps your lips to retain moisture content. If lips do become chapped, a good lip balm combined with some occasional exfoliation is often enough to heal lips, according to the experts. For exfoliators, a soft-bristled toothbrush, washcloth or sugar scrub will buff away dry skin without causing irritation. Just remember to be gentle as lips are delicate. Use a scrub a couple of times a week at most. Never forget the all-important lip balm finish.

Stop licking you lips: While having chapped lips many of you try to smooth it by licking of your lips but remember licking may cause more trouble. Because Saliva evaporates quickly, and the same chemicals in our saliva that kick off digestion will eat away at your lip skin with excessive licking. There's no magic bullet for this step – you just need to stop! Apply a lip balm every time you feel the urge to lick.

Breathe through your nose: Breathing through your mouth can dehydrate your lips. If you tend to breathe through your mouth, practice nose-breathing to get in the habit. Sit for a few minutes each day and breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Try sleeping with a nasal dilator strip to encourage your nasal passages to open.

Keep your lipsticks and toothpaste in check: If you have dry cracked lips and some peeling or raw areas inside of your mouth, consider changing your toothpaste or mouthwash to one free of sodium laureth sulfate. It also recommends avoiding longwear lipsticks as these often work by drying out your lips to keep the color on longer.

Intake of Vitamin B: Vitamin B plays an important role in the regular functioning of your body. It provides energy, helps your immune system fight off diseases, and contributes to healthy skin, Green says. Without enough Vitamin B in your system, you may experience a variety of skin issues, such as dry lips, she adds. To make sure you're not deficient; eat plenty of Vitamin B-rich foods like eggs and lean meat.
